The man was Haji Abubacker bin Mohd Hussain, who had come from South India to Malaya in 1929, at the age of 14. Haji Abubacker was determined to succeed; he worked hard to realise his dream.
For Haji Abubacker, service was all important. He had a motto "We serve you wherever you are" and would deliver even the smallest of items to a customer's doorstep.
Through his hard work and sound business decisions, Barkath Stores began to flourish. Haji Abu Backer made wise investments with his sundry shop profits and soon, branches were established in Butterworth, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Impressed by his assessment, they appointed Barkath Stores as the sole agent for Hacks for Malaya and Singapore.
Barkath Stores also imported quality Elkes biscuits and Lyons ice-cream from England.
In 1965, as a result of shipment delays, high duties and price competition, Haji Abu Backer persuaded the Hacks manufacturers, White Hudson Pte Ltd, to enter into a joint-venture with Barkath Stores to produce the sweets locally.
Haji Abu Backer's eldest son, Barkath Ali was sent to England to study all aspects of the manufacturing and marketing of Hacks. A year later, he returned and successfully helped to launch Hacks Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
